# Student Tools

The aids EXAMIND puts in the assessment room for students — an on-screen calculator you enable per assessment, and accessibility settings students control themselves.

Student Tools are the aids EXAMIND makes available to a student inside the assessment room. They are the counterpart to [Tactical Deterrents](/v1/examind-platform/deliver/tactical-deterrents.md): deterrents govern what a student may do during the attempt, tools help them do the work.

There are two kinds, and they're controlled by different people:

* The **calculator** is yours to turn on, per assessment.
* **Accessibility settings** belong to the student, and are always available.

## Calculator

Turning on the calculator gives students an on-screen calculator inside the assessment room, so they don't have to reach for a separate device or leave the assessment to find one.

### Turn it on

1. Open the assessment and go to **Settings**.
2. Under **Student Tools**, switch on **Enable Calculator**.

The setting appears on **exams, quizzes, and practice assessments** — the types where students answer questions with numbers in them. It isn't offered on essay, simulation, or file upload assessments, where the work either isn't quantitative or is done outside the room.

To check what students will get, open the assessment **Preview**: the calculator appears there the same way it does for a student.

### What students see

A calculator button sits in the bottom-right corner of the assessment room. Selecting it opens a calculator panel that students can drag anywhere on the screen — with the mouse, or with the arrow keys once the panel has focus. It stays where they put it, and closing it keeps whatever they had entered, so putting the calculator away mid-calculation doesn't lose the work.

{% hint style="info" %}
Proctored exams usually require students to keep any calculator on screen. The EXAMIND calculator sits in the assessment itself, so it satisfies that rule without students leaving the exam to find one. See [Proctoring Integrations](/v1/it-administration/proctoring-integrations.md).
{% endhint %}

## Accessibility settings

Every student can adjust the assessment room for themselves, on any assessment type and any screen size. There's nothing for you to enable.

Students open the accessibility button in the bottom-right corner of the room and choose:

* **Color Blind Mode** — adjusts the interface for deuteranopia, protanopia, tritanopia, or achromatopsia.
* **Dyslexic Font** — renders the assessment in a typeface designed for readers with dyslexia.

A student's choices follow them, so they only have to set them once.
